Feeding Your Lawn

Why do most of us desire a healthy lawn? The most obvious reason is that it looks nice and enhances the esthetic appeal of your home. Another reason is that having a healthy lawn is beneficial to our environment. A lawn acts as a great carbon sink when it is healthy and actively growing. Also, a healthy lawn effectively filters surface water, traps dust, cools the ground and prevents soil erosion. A healthy lawn can withstand environmental pressures that grass encounters regularly such as: drought, insects, disease and weeds. With proper, and consistent, maintenance practices you can achieve a healthy lawn. One of the most important maintenance practices includes feeding your lawn. Turf grass plants require many elements to grow strong and healthily. Each nutrient provides a different purpose and is required in different amounts. A deficiency of any element can limit a plant’s growth. Fortunately, most elements are supplied to the plants through the natural processes in the soil. Out of all the elements there are three primary nutrients, Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium. Nitrogen promotes vigorous growth and the green colour we all desire for our plants. Too much or too little nitrogen can cause problems that can be difficult to fix. Too little nitrogen can cause your lawn to grow slowly, yellow and to become more susceptible to lawn disease and weeds. Too much nitrogen can lead to excessive leaf growth, reduced root growth and poor tolerance to environmental pressures that can lead to disease. Phosphorous is important in stimulating early root growth and promoting early health and strength in plants. Phosphorous moves very little in the soil and it can move out of the soils through surface water and erosion which has been linked to the degradation of fresh bodies of water. Thankfully, most soils are naturally high in Phosphorous and are able to supply enough Phosphorous for vigorous lawn growth for many years without having to add this macronutrient to fertilizers. Potassium plays an important role in the synthesis of some plant components and plant health. It also helps plants absorb and use the other elements more efficiently, such as nitrogen. Potassium deficiencies can result in turf grass disease and lowers the tolerance against environmental pressures and stresses. Fertilizers are available with one or a blend of the primary nutrients. When looking at a bag of fertilizer you will notice three bold numbers on the label. The first represents the amount of nitrogen, the second number represents the amount of phosphorous, and the third number represents amount of potassium. Each lawn requires different treatments season-to-season because there are no two lawns alike.
